With all short stories written by someone, you have a breakdown of the rhetorical triangle. In this case you have Booker T. Washington, a wonderful writer. He uses both pathos and symbolism to attract his reader in. It can be easily said that he accomplished his goal and made you want to read more.
Washington immediately jumps into the action by telling of a young boy who was very poor. We can all say that his audience was intended for mostly poor whites. He wants to let them know the suffer of blacks in these hard times. So there is is establishment of pathos. So the boy would always get a couple coins tossed at him every time he walked passed the elderly man. The man felt bad for him. He had been described as a poor black boy who was covered from head to foot in sores. As soon as this was said a connection between the reader and the boy was released. Once i read this i was immediately attracted in. It made me want to help out the young boy. This gentleman , preferably a white man, had the decency to help out a young black boy so why can't other whites do the same. Is it that they feel that their minds cannot be changed based upon the poor health of a fellow citizen. Either way it is fact that the drive this young boy has along with his physical condition was enough for the man to basically pay his way for college. Another way that he molds an argument is through symbolism.
Now symbolism is present in various ways. The man Mr.S------ standing for whites and some blacks who really do have a heart. The little boy standing for the kids in the world who just wanted to know how to read, know how to write, and be like all the other kids. The little money being tossed to him everyday was the kids progress. Everyday he took a step further into getting his education. All of these examples of symbolism and his pathos are all crucial in really getting a complete idea of the feelings trying to be captured and knowing what the story is about.
So Washington establishes his points through pathos and symbolism. Both ways are valuable and credible sources on creating an argument and executing it. They both did accomplish there goals and really attracted me in. I definitely feel that the same was present amongst other audiences.
