As Columbus made his four voyages to the new world he wrote several letters. The first was to Luis de Santagel. He starts out by establishing some pathos even though its not sorrow or pity. He tells him that he will be pleased with the voyage he was blessed with. Santangel started off as a follower of his ventures. He is a royal official and this could serve as some type of credibility. He wanted to get somebody credible on his side to have a story to tell that one would believe. It also establishes some diction. He uses the word hamlet to describe the villages. He doesn't really feel to accomplished because he expected to come across something more useful and he only found these small villages. The first letter was really a story of what the new world was like and what Columbus saw. His audience is Luis de Santangel. The reason for writing the letter to Santangel is to possibly put his reputation. Remembering that Santangel was a official with credibility, then he could tell him all about his findings and everyone will believe him because of his position of power. Now the next letter which was to Ferdinand and Isabella was on his fourth voyage. He just wanted to write back to the people of the town he named and state how he felt. I want to combine diction and pathos together when he says,"I never think without weeping."(Columbus:Letter to Ferdinand and Isabella). He couldn't think about absolutely anything without crying. This was really helpful with the fact that he failed to complete his task. He wants everybody to feel his and that's why he mentioned not being able to think without crying. Every time he thinks he has to remember his failure and that's more painful than not even completing the main voyage. Columbus also repeated the words your highness. I think he feels that God is not the only thing to be scared of. He talks about your highness as if there was a living God to be worshipped and scared of. When he was taken captive along with his two brothers, their was really nothing for him to do. They were treated like dirt. "I was made a prisoner and with my two brothers was thrown into a ship, laden with fetters, stripped to the skin, very ill-treated, and without being tried or condemned".(Columbus:Letter to Ferdinand and Isabella). There was no argument, dispute or even a testimony they just took them captive and made a mockery of them. This is why i think he is very depressed because his self-esteem has been taken away from him. This brought out the pathos in the reading because he wanted to put everyone in his position and feel sorry for him by knowing what he went through.
