Anne Dudley Bradstreet was born in 1612 in Northampton, England. Anne was tutored by her father Thomas Bradstreet, a steward, making her highly educated. Her father's protege was a man named Simon Bradstreet who she shortly after married. The Bradstreet's came to America in 1630 along the ship Arbella. When they arrived, they came to places such as Salem, Boston, Cambridge, and Ipswich but finally decided to settle down on a farm in North Andover, Massachusetts. Her husband Simon was a judge and legislator so he was away from home a lot, but Anne was a wonderful wife and mother of their eight children. Life was a hard especially with the constant threat of an Indian attack and her poor health but she still amnaged to slip some time in for poetry. In 1647, Anne's brother John Cambridge took some of her work to England and had it published under the title The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up In America. In 1647 Anne added to a corrected her next volume which was called "Several Poems". This volume dealt with more of how her New England life was like and her surroundings. It included several poems such as: "Contemplations", "The Flesh and the Spirit",and "The Author of Her Book". John Ellis published her prose "Meditations" and some of her other more professional pieces in 1867. She is a realy good poet and was even considered America's First authentic poet especially really strong in her later works.
